My main interest in music is cross-cultural jazz, a phenomenon that from about 1960 becomes pivotal in the history of improvisation. Luminaries such as John and Alice Coltrane, Ravi Shankar, Miles Davis, Shakti, Oregon, Charlie Mariano, Karnataka College of Percussion, Egberto Gismonti, and Joe Zawinul are notable examples.
The diverse cultural influences that I have absorbed over a long time are integral to my approach to jazz. Thus, the use of South Indian gamaka and flamenco-type falsetas, for example, do not feel, nor I hope sound, like borrowed elements. Rather, they reflect a syncretic experience resulting from the music, musicians, and cultures that have inspired me, and still do. In this sense, they represent the history of my musical identity. These pathways are explored in collaboration with many fine Australian and International musicians that I have the pleasure to work with.
